Commissioners approve $114,897.70 reallocation to outfit Brevard Old Gym for spectator use

The Transylvania County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a request from the Board of Education on Feb. 23 to reallocate $114,897.70 in Education Capital Fund dollars to equip the remodeled Old Gym for spectator use.
The transfer consists of $105,000 from a FY 2021 Brevard Elementary air handler project that will not move forward and $9,897.70 remaining from a FY 2024 systemwide capital repairs line. County Manager Jaime Laugher said county and school staff reviewed completed and inactive projects to identify available funding for current needs.
Board members expressed support for maximizing existing facilities rather than pursuing new construction and noted improved coordination between the County and the School System. Commissioner Jake Dalton moved to approve the reallocation; Commissioner Larry Chapman seconded, and the motion passed unanimously.
The Board noted the Old Gym is expected to begin hosting events once outfitted and that the reallocation will allow immediate improvements without new borrowing or tax increases.
