Schools, students and community partners recognized at Lemon Grove board meeting

Several school communities and community partners were publicly recognized by the Lemon Grove School District board Feb. 10.
Principal Levon Leon and school social worker Sophie Zoyan introduced student members of the Vista La Mesa Academy "Cheetah Patrol," a student leadership and restorative‑practices program that trains upper‑grade students to support younger students during lunch and recess. "Cheetah Patrol is a leadership program...members learn how to solve problems, communicate respectfully, and support others in positive ways," Zoyan said.
The board also recognized Monterey Heights STEAM Academy and Mount Vernon Dual‑Immersion Elementary for high district CASP scores (Monterey Heights: math and science; Mount Vernon: English language arts). Plaques will be displayed at district and site offices.
Community philanthropy was on display: Calos Cares Foundation awarded $2,000 to Monterey Heights for an upcoming spring project. Penny Newell of Calos Cares described the foundation’s regional support for teachers and education. Separately, the district accepted a $2,500 contribution from the San Manuel Nation to fund parent training on artificial‑intelligence topics tied to a board resolution on AI; staff said the training will begin in April.
The board members offered praise and encouraged parents and families in attendance to celebrate the students and school staff.
