The Dolores County Board of Public Health voted to post an internal job advertisement for a county public health director, approving a 10‑day application window that will close on March 11, 2026 and a proposed salary range of $45,000 to $51,750.
At the board’s regular meeting, the chair said the county must hire a director after a neighboring county informed Dolores County it would no longer serve as the county’s public health director. A staff member told the board a posting was ready for review and that, "I can go get that... and let you guys look at it," and outlined options for internal versus public advertisement.
A board member moved to approve posting the position internally; another member seconded the motion and the board voted unanimously to approve the internal posting. The board directed staff to prepare the advertisement and to close the internal application period on March 11, 2026, with the intent to address hiring at the next meeting in Rico on March 15.
Board members discussed the job description’s scope. Staff said they hoped to hire a candidate who could consolidate required skills to perform onsite wastewater (OWTS) inspections alongside the public health director responsibilities. The posting, as approved, would focus the search initially within county staff; if no candidate is selected, the board may open the process more broadly in a later posting.
The action taken at the meeting was procedural: it authorized posting the position and set a timeline for applications. Staff and board members emphasized statutory obligation to have a director but did not specify the statute by number during the discussion. The board also asked staff to correct dates and finalize the posting text before publication.
The posting period and salary range were affirmed by the board; the meeting record shows the motion to advertise was made, seconded and approved. The board will reconvene on March 15 in Rico, when members expect to take further steps on hiring.
