PASADENA ISD honors dozens of students, a teacher finalist and performing‑arts award winners

At its May 28, 2024 meeting, the PASADENA ISD Board of Trustees recognized 62 students who advanced to national or international competitions, honored a teacher named a Texas finalist for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, and celebrated multiple athletics and fine‑arts honors.
The PASADENA ISD Board of Trustees used part of its May 28 meeting to spotlight student and teacher achievements across career and technical education, athletics and the fine arts.
Tanya Hagar, the district’s executive director of career and technical education, told trustees that “it is an honor to be here to recognize individuals who under the guidance of their dedicated advisers have advanced to a national or international competition.” She said 62 students advanced this year, and the board recognized a 28‑member FIRST robotics team drawn from multiple high schools.
Board members also recognized Pasadena Memorial High School’s archery team — which the presenters said advanced to the national Western finals in Salt Lake City — as well as students advancing in Future Educators, other CTE pathways and academic competitions.
The board honored Lauren Paos, a district graduate and elementary mathematics teacher, who was named one of three Texas finalists for the 2024 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. District presenters summarized Paos’s teaching roles and district leadership, saying the award recognizes teachers who “develop and implement a high‑quality instructional program that is informed by content knowledge and enhances student learning.”
Athletics and fine‑arts accomplishments were also highlighted. Coaches Robert and Darla Kelly and district staff named multiple swimmers who earned Academic All‑State and Academic All‑American honors from state and national coaches’ associations. Gabriel Flores, the assistant director of fine arts, presented honors for visual and theater arts, including district winners at the Texas Elementary Art Meet and students and staff recognized at the Tommy Tune Awards.
Trustees invited families and staff to join students for photos and public recognition. The board moved on to regular business after the recognitions and a round of applause for the awardees.
The district scheduled a lobby photo opportunity and said additional celebrations — including an unveiling tied to the district’s fall football season — will be announced in advance.
