Pasadena ISD trustees honor longtime tournament volunteer and approve calendar, plans, grants and contracts

At a Dec. 17 special session, the Pasadena ISD Board of Trustees presented a volunteer award to Bruce Stone and approved personnel appointments, a UT Health cooperative agreement, campus and district improvement plans, the 2025–26 academic calendar (Calendar 3), a homeless-students grant and several interagency contracts and construction change orders.
Pasadena ISD trustees met in special session on Dec. 17, 2024, in the district administration building and presented the McDonald’s Texas Invitational ‘‘Barry Harris Extra Effort’’ award to volunteer Bruce Stone before approving a slate of personnel moves, grants, contracts and planning documents.
Art Delario, representing the Education Foundation, presented the award to Stone, noting Stone’s long-term work on logos, T‑shirt designs, program covers, printed materials and the tournament app. "Bruce has been the individual that we went to for every design element introduced in the tournament," Delario said. The board and attendees applauded the recognition.
In routine business, the board voted to approve the appointment of Kelsey to the district position of Nutrition Services Operations Coordinator. The board also approved a cooperative agreement with The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio to place clinical interns in Pasadena ISD.
The trustees approved campus comprehensive support and improvement plans and individual campus improvement plans for the 2024–25 school year, and they adopted the district improvement plan for 2024–25. A board member thanked district staff Scott Harold for organizing and assembling the documents.
The board also authorized an interagency cooperation contract with the Harris County Department of Education to support speech and debate program opportunities and adopted a resolution designating non‑business days for purposes of the Texas Public Information Act for the 2025 calendar year.
On the 2025–26 academic calendar, trustees approved Calendar 3 and the designation of waiver days for staff professional development. District staff told the board that staff voting favored Calendar 3 (staff vote reported as 73% for Calendar 3) and said the district will return with guidelines for exchange days and a plan for implementation. When a trustee asked whether June 19 (Juneteenth) was considered, staff said summer‑school calendars are set later and the district would review that question during summer‑school planning.
The board approved the Texas Education for Homeless Children and Youth grant award listed on the agenda (transcript reads "63,360 $56") and heard district staff report that the district has roughly 1,880 students identified for homeless‑student services, with about 580 identified through McKinney‑Vento supports and others living in hotels, shelters or doubled‑up situations. "We currently have 1,880 students identified right now," a staff member said, noting the breakdown by living situation.
Trustees also approved a memorandum of understanding with the City of Pasadena to permit outdoor warning siren installations on district property and approved Final Change Order No. 001 for the 2022 Bond LED lights at high school turf fields as a credit of $127,500.
All motions were moved, seconded and announced as carried by the presiding member during the meeting. The board proceeded through the published agenda items during the session.
The board’s actions included several interagency and programmatic approvals intended to support student services, professional development and district facilities; the district will bring administrative implementation details (exchange‑day guidelines and summer‑school calendar decisions) back to the board for future consideration.
