Englewood Public School District named 2026 District of Distinction for Academic Acceleration

The Englewood Public School District opened its reorganization meeting by announcing a national recognition: the district was named the 2026 winner of the "District of Distinction for Academic Acceleration," officials said.

Dr. Laura Scamadella, assistant superintendent for curriculum, presented the award and credited three years of strategic planning, disciplined instructional focus and "unwavering belief" in student potential for the gains. "On behalf of the Englewood Public School District, I am deeply honored to present the District of Distinction Award for Academic Acceleration to the Englewood public community," she said.

Scamadella noted the district's recovery and measurable gains since 2024 and pointed to a New Jersey Spotlight News article that profiled Englewood as one of nine low-income districts that outperformed after the pandemic slump. "This honor affirms not only the outcomes we have achieved over the last three years, but the intentional systems and collective commitment that made those outcomes possible," she said.

The announcement also celebrated Superintendent Dr. Hazelton's selection as a national "Leader of Distinction," described during the meeting as recognition of her innovative strategies and collaborative leadership. "Dr. Hazelton exemplifies visionary leadership through a clear and inspiring focus of excellence," Scamadella said.

Board members and the mayor who participated in the swearing-in ceremonies offered public congratulations during the meeting. The district said the award is not a finish line but reflects ongoing work to refine instruction and support student success.
