CUSD 300 honors students and staff, announces March community workshop and district programs

The Community Unit School District 300 board opened its March 10 meeting with recognition for students and staff and several community announcements.
Board President Christine Burkett turned the meeting over to Superintendent Dr. Martinez Smith, who invited Principal Marlene Munoz of Lakewood Dual Language Academy to introduce six students who led the Pledge of Allegiance. "My name is Marlene Munoz, and I'm the proud principal of Lakewood Dual Language Academy," Munoz said, introducing the student leaders and praising their leadership and contributions to school culture.
Beth Gowdy, Director of Literacy PreK–8, introduced Carrie Curry, the district spelling bee coordinator, to announce district winners from the Feb. 5 competition and those advancing to county-level bees. "Ninety middle schoolers descended on CMS on February 5th to prove that they do not need spell check," Curry said; she named grade-level winners and noted two students who qualified for county competitions and the Scripps regional semi-finals.
Dr. Thomas Parisi, director for PE, health, drivers education and athletics, and Hampshire coach Matt Todd recognized Hampshire High School’s girls wrestling team for success at the IHSA Girls State Tournament. Parisi and Todd listed individual placements and season records and celebrated the team’s state championship as a district milestone.
The board also announced community events and district programs. District leaders invited residents to the third "Together for Tomorrow" community workshop on Thursday, March 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Amundsen High School to review building-improvement funding and district finances; childcare and Spanish translation will be available. The board noted district engagement with student interns at Advocate Sherman Hospital and a March 26 virtual event marking Irish American Heritage Month. The board also congratulated the D300 Food Pantry for raising more than $16,000 at the Coldest Night of the Year walk.
No members of the public had signed up to speak during the public-participation portion of the meeting. The board then moved through routine consent items and later recessed for closed-session deliberations.
The meeting adjourned after the board reconvened and took final actions following closed session.
