Commissioners recognize Burke County 4‑H winners and proclaim National 4‑H Week and Disability Employment Awareness Month

The Burke County Board of Commissioners used part of its Sept. 15 meeting to highlight youth and workforce programs. Cooperative Extension 4‑H agent Nikki Carpenter gave an overview of 4‑H programming and recognized a number of local youth for state and national awards, including the county horse bowl team and individual contest winners.
Carpenter introduced students and coaches and noted that in 2024 Burke County 4‑H reached nearly 2,100 school‑age youth through clubs, school enrichment and special‑interest programs. She said the county will celebrate project record book winners at county achievement night on Nov. 18.
Following the presentation the board accepted the report and approved a proclamation designating Oct. 5–11, 2025 as National 4‑H Week. Later in the meeting representatives from the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (EIPD) asked for and received a proclamation recognizing October 2025 as National Disability Employment Awareness Month; Janet Hannah and Naira Simmons presented local statistics: Burke County population 87,570 and an estimated 11,910 residents with a disability, with 215 applications for services last year leading to 48 referrals and 23 placements closed.
The board approved both proclamations by unanimous vote and thanked 4‑H members and vocational services staff for their work.
