Burke County says DMV/Revenue 'gap' billing generated thousands of vehicle tax notices; residents urged to verify before paying
Summary
After a state DMV/Revenue report generated roughly 8,000 vehicle 'gap' bills, Burke County officials said about 6,500 remain under review and urged residents to check bills and call the tax office; refunds will be issued for overpayments, county staff said Sept. 15.

Burke County officials warned residents Sept. 15 that a state‑generated report produced thousands of vehicle “gap” bills tied to delayed tag renewals and that some of the records submitted to the county contained errors.
County Manager Brian Epley told the Board of Commissioners that approximately 8,000 bills were mailed based on data received from the state, and after removing duplicates the county identified roughly 6,500 accounts that still need review. “We came to find out that some of that information was erroneous,” Epley said, urging residents to examine any bill carefully before paying.
Epley said tax office staff have been helping several hundred residents per day and that the county will issue refunds promptly for any overpayments. He asked residents who receive a gap bill and believe it may be incorrect to call the tax office or visit in person so staff can reconcile DMV and local records before payment.
County leaders emphasized that the mailing originated from state DMV/Revenue data and not from a local policy change; the board and staff asked for patience while the county resolves duplicates and calculation errors.
