Lincoln County health department reports permit workload, burn-permit activity and animal-shelter census

A Lincoln County health department representative updated the board on permitting, burn-permit activity and animal-shelter operations.
"Out of the 82 applications we received, we've issued 58 permits," the representative said, and added 24 applications were either recently received or waiting on more information. The representative reported 819 residential burn permits were issued in April in the Libby area and those permits were activated 922 times overall; staff noted burn-permit activations can include multiple days for the same permit. Two burn violations were recorded and staff identified approximate locations for enforcement follow-up.
On animal services, staff reported the county shelter held 14 dogs (11 available for adoption, three on hold) and 10 cats (five available). The county has transferred animals to larger shelters in nearby population centers and said an informal nonprofit, Lincoln County Shelter Friends, is forming a board to help with outreach and adoptions. Staff said the department is short-staffed but has extended an offer to fill a sanitarium position and expects an answer within a week.
