Board proclaims January as National Mentoring Month and hears from Empower Youth Network

Superintendent Dan Schlofeld read a proclamation honoring mentors and the district’s partnership with programs such as Youth Success Mentoring. The proclamation highlighted mentoring’s role in improving attendance, college enrollment and social-emotional support.
Kathy Highland, representing Empower Youth Network, told the board the local program has more than 160 active mentor–student matches across the valley, has operated for eight years, and provides weekly, school‑day mentoring focused on social‑emotional growth. Highland asked community members to consider volunteering or to share information about the program; she left brochures and business cards and noted an application at empoweryouthnetwork.org.
Board members thanked volunteers and noted an opportunity to recognize long‑serving mentors in the community. No formal action beyond the proclamation was recorded during the presentation.
