Board approves MOU to compensate detectives for daily on-call time

The board approved a memorandum of understanding to compensate sheriff's detectives with a half-hour of pay for each day they are required to remain on call. County staff said the change mirrors compensation already in place for K9 handlers and a mine-task-force officer, the bargaining unit approved the language, and staff expect the cost to be minimal and budget neutral.
The sheriff described the operational constraints that make on-call pay appropriate: detectives must be available for emergency responses, often cannot take time off or engage in activities that would impede response. "This is pretty standard across our industry ... they would be under this agreement compensated half hour a day for on call time and they would rotate through that basically every four weeks," the sheriff said.
The board moved, seconded and approved the memorandum of understanding and authorized immediate implementation; staff said the start date will be updated and the pay will begin as soon as administrative updates are completed.
