Cameron County commissioners used the meeting to review a series of administrative and service updates, urging attendance at a regional grants seminar while approving several procedural agreements.
Staff announced a March 12 grant seminar hosted by Martin Cer’s office at Smithport Fire Hall covering municipal planning, strategic management and neighborhood assistance grants and encouraged municipal and nonprofit leaders to attend. The board also noted a final MACP (medical-assistance-transportation) allocation for FY24–25 of $13,544 and referenced an initial allocation for FY25–26 noted in the report (figure in the transcript was unclear).
On elections, staff processed and prepared to mail more than 600 mail-ballot applications to registered voters ahead of the May primary. In senior services, the Emporium senior center was highlighted as the region’s second-highest congregate meal deliverer and second-highest overall meal provider; the county reported a new meal provider (Dream Catch of St. Marys) improved affordability and participation.
The commissioners approved an inmate-housing agreement with Potter County, following a sheriff’s recommendation, and enacted a memorandum of understanding with Northern Tier Community Action to formalize lead-agency responsibilities and billing alignment for the state food-purchase plan under updated grant language.
Other items included brownfield reuse planning for Emporium Overlook, a pending presentation at a national NICO conference on arts and culture, and staff work on a county-website redesign. Chair also discussed efforts on a state tax-fairness coalition and House Bill 2141, which the chair said would seek to return roughly 20% of revenue from timber, oil and gas sales occurring on state lands to local counties.
The meeting closed with emergency-management remarks about the recent storm response, communications improvements and plans to open warming centers only for extended outages.
