Residents, commissioners push for community uses and housing in brownfields planning

Cameron County officials announced a new brownfields study and an online engagement link inviting residents to propose uses for a vacant building and other blighted properties.

County staff said the compiled ideas will be displayed for community voting in the next round. "There is a new study that you're going to be able to hit a link and everything's compiled and then you can send your ideas," a commissioner reported.

During public input, a young resident urged keeping the gymnasium and auditorium in community use and suggested converting upper floors to housing to help free up larger homes for first-time buyers. "Top three is definitely using I continue using gymnasium ... the downstairs should stay recreational space ... the third level I think that that should be rehab for housing," the resident said.
