Newton County adopts 2026 budget and keeps tax rate at no-new-revenue level

Newton County Commissioners on Thursday adopted the county’s fiscal-year 2026 budget and approved a no-new-revenue tax rate aimed at collecting approximately the same dollar amount as last year.
The court voted to adopt a proposed 2026 budget of $10,462,870.70, a figure commissioners said includes contingency funds and projections of carryover revenue. County leaders recorded a roll-call-style vote: each precinct and the county judge voted in favor. A separate recorded vote adopted the tax rate of 0.696645 per $100 valuation.
During the workshop and hearings, commissioners reviewed the budget’s revenue projection, carryover assumptions and line-item changes. Officials said the budget assumes recovery of outstanding tax collections projected to be received before next year; the court did not identify any immediate, extraordinary actions to recover those amounts before the fiscal year closes.
The court also set proposed 2026 salary expenses and allowances for elected and precinct officers. The salary schedule listed the county judge at $59,489.24 (with a state judicial supplement of $31,500), county clerk $52,275, district clerk $52,275 and constable precinct pay and travel allowances. The district attorney’s county payment was listed as $14,000 and the county sheriff’s pay was listed with a vehicle allowance figure in the schedule.
Commissioners and staff said they will make the adopted budget and salary schedule available on the Newton County website under the 2026 budget section.
The court closed the public hearings and indicated routine budget administration and implementation steps will follow, including software and procedural improvements discussed during the workshop.
