Dolores County weighs seeking state sponsorship to change elected-official salary classification

Dolores County commissioners discussed whether to pursue a change in the county’s elected-official salary classification, a process that would require legislative sponsorship and coordination with other counties. Staff summarized a recent workshop showing proposed CPI-indexed increases and category adjustments and noted the legal avenue for change is through state legislation or an agreed reclassification process.
Commissioners reviewed example figures (the presentation included proposed increases for commissioners, treasurer, assessor and clerk and a higher proposed amount for the sheriff). Several commissioners said they would like to pursue a classification change but recognized that a successful change typically requires sponsorship and cooperation with other counties. Staff said tentative legislative sponsorship should be sought in early January to meet legislative timelines and recommended bringing a resolution to the board at the Dec. 29 end-of-month meeting if sponsors and supporting counties can be identified.
Commissioners asked staff to schedule a follow-up workshop, to reach out to legislators for tentative sponsorship, and to consult with peer counties and CCI or other associations to assess support for a classification change. The board did not adopt a resolution at this meeting; it set next steps and scheduled additional discussion with the goal of deciding by the end of the month.
