Douglas County commissioners unanimously authorized the procurement of a 2026 Ford F550 and associated upfits at the April 8 meeting.
Commissioner Dorsy pulled the consent‑agenda item to ask whether local dealers had been consulted. Chad Voy, director of public works, said the county uses a Johnson County master agreement for fleet purchases; dealers in the county were invited to bid on that master agreement but typically do not compete on heavy fleet specifications and pricing. Voy said Fleet worked with partner jurisdictions to standardize specifications and that the cooperative pricing yields a better deal than a local purchase for this equipment class.
The motion authorized the board chair to execute contracts with Johnny Mission Ford for the 2026 Ford F550 ($75,711) and with American Equipment Company to install a flatbed, spreader and plow ($63,129), for total vehicle cost of $138,840. The vote was unanimous.
Public works staff said they would continue outreach about potential local preference policy; commissioners indicated that formal policy creation was a topic for future consideration.
