District to start all students in Studio Art I to widen pathways to AP and honors art

Curriculum staff told the board they plan to realign the high‑school art sequence so that all students begin with Studio Art I instead of Art Appreciation, enabling students who develop an interest to move into Studio Art II and ultimately Studio Art III and IV with honors and college‑prep options.
The presenter said the change is intended to increase access to advanced coursework without increasing section sizes or staffing, and that curriculum revisions and additional rigor (presentations, writing assignments, adjusted rubrics) will be completed over the summer. “Instead of offering art appreciation we’re going to start all students with our Studio Art One course so students who develop a love [of the arts] can continue,” the curriculum presenter said.
Staff also reminded the board about the TR Excellence Expo on April 3 at the arena, which will include performances, presentations and community partners such as Ocean County College and local organizations.
During public comment, Miss Palazo asked for the district’s adequacy number. The chair or staff replied they believed the adequacy figure is approximately $106 million and offered to double‑check and follow up by email.
