On a high‑cost item, staff recommended awarding the fabric replacement contract for the John Bennett Athletics Center to American Athletic Court Inc, citing the company’s prior district work. The project scope presented includes lowering and removing the existing inflatable structure, replacing it with a double‑wall insulated fabric system, new lighting and floor surfacing, line striping, replacement of damaged exit doors, and installation of a groundwater cut intended to reduce water‑table intrusion. Staff presented the project cost as $3,186,000 and said work is expected to be completed before the next usage season, though the early part of school could require holding some gym classes in alternate locations while work is underway.
Staff also described several smaller projects: demolition of a front canopy at Hooper Avenue Elementary by district maintenance crews to avoid a formal bid when quotes were high; a recommended change order to allow the next phase of the Intermediate South roof and exterior wall project; and replacement windows under a grant at Washington Street and West over that are nearing completion.
Environmental and safety items included retaining a new Licensed Site Remediation Professional (LSRP) for 123 Walnut Street after the prior LSRP recused for health reasons, and initiation of districtwide water testing with results pending. Staff noted groundwater monitoring near Pine Beach Elementary is progressing and may move from quarterly to annual testing if results continue to improve.
The board asked for cost and schedule details about the John Bennett work; staff reiterated the scope and the presented cost estimate and said the contractor recommended has completed similar district projects in the past.
