Hall County moves to ask state for review of deadly Capitol Avenue/Highway 30 intersection

Commissioners reviewed a staff summary of accidents at the Capitol Avenue and Highway 30 area and said the site has produced multiple fatalities over the past decade, including two so far in 2026.

A presenting commissioner noted that three of the fatal crashes in recent years involved vehicles pulling from a county street onto Highway 30 and being struck by westbound traffic. Commissioners said the site’s geometry, evening glare and heavy vehicle traffic increase risk for drivers trying to cross or turn onto the highway.

"How many people got to die there before we look at it, you know?" one commissioner asked. The board then voted to send a letter to the Nebraska Department of Transportation requesting a traffic study and review of possible engineering changes, with the sheriff’s office and county staff assisting in drafting the language.

The motion to send a letter carried on a board vote (recorded as six yes votes). Commissioners noted that the state is responsible for the highway intersection and that a formal traffic study by the state would be the typical next step.

Separately, during public comment resident Mike Dobish urged the county to add problematic washboard sections and blind intersections to the six‑year road plan and to direct grader operators to correct dangerous crown and intersection conditions to protect first responders and school transportation.
