At the opening public hearing, Deweyville property owner Mr. Parks asked Newton County commissioners to waive penalties, interest and legal fees tied to unpaid property taxes after he said a mailed payment was returned to his parents' address and not cashed.
"All I'm asking for is for tax penalties and things like that with my check stub showing my intentions to have paid the taxes," Mr. Parks said, explaining he purchased the property at the end of 2023, believed taxes were paid and only discovered the returned check when he attempted to pay the following year.
Mr. Parks told the court he had postal receipts and a returned check stub showing payment attempts and asked commissioners to consider penalties from the date he attempted to pay. He said some prior years carried penalties unrelated to his ownership and sought relief only for the year in question.
The county did not reach a final decision during the public comment period; staff and commissioners acknowledged the documentation and indicated they would consider the request under county tax procedures.
