Harrison County retires K9 'PO'; handler to adopt retired canine

Harrison County Commissioners Court voted Feb. 26 to retire K9 PO and permit Deputy Bailey Trice to assume ownership and responsibility for the dog's care.
Sheriff described PO's nine years of service in narcotics detection, tracking and handler protection, and noted that PO is now experiencing a back problem that makes patrol duty difficult. The sheriff praised handlers' round‑the‑clock care obligations and said the department has procured a replacement K9 to continue operational capability. "He stays excited all the time, even though he's gotten to be an old man... he has been a good steward for our office, not only for handler protection for her, but for the drugs he's found," the sheriff said as he introduced PO to the court.
Commissioner Ebar moved to approve the retirement and adoption; Commissioner Timmons seconded. The motion passed unanimously, 5–0. Court members paused business to take a photo after the vote.
