A sheriff’s office representative told the court that the department pays for vehicles via leases and that the first payments on the new leases won’t be due until 2027. The department said the two new vehicles will raise annual lease costs by about $20,000 across the two units but add capabilities: one Tahoe will support live video monitoring for drone deployments, and the other will be rigged to transport and support the new K9, Rhino, handled by Chad Answorth. The office said the K9 is nationally certified in narcotics detection and tracking and has already assisted law enforcement during a recent apprehension.
Commissioners approved the line item motion to accept the listed patrol vehicle leases and outfitting. Commissioner Pal, who moved approval, said the K9 and drone vehicle are force multipliers for public safety in the county.
