The Harrison County Commissioners Court on Jan. 15 approved a resolution supporting legislation that would exempt Texas counties from the state portion of the hotel‑occupancy tax when county employees stay overnight in another municipality.
Judge Sims explained the proposal came from Cass County Judge Travis Ransom; the measure seeks to prevent "tax churn" in which local tax dollars are taxed again when county employees travel. Commissioner Hatfield moved to amend the wording from "accept" to "approve" before the resolution passed unanimously.
Why it matters: Commissioners said the change would modestly reduce county travel costs and address what one commissioner described as an inequity in taxing local funds when county employees stay in other jurisdictions.
Next steps: The court’s action is a resolution of support; any change requires state legislative action.
