Commissioners approve Pioneer Park pedal track; volunteers and grant funding will cover construction

Lincoln County commissioners approved the final location and design for a Pioneer Park pedal (bicycle) track during their April 16 meeting, moving the project from preliminary approval into construction readiness.

The online presenter, identified in the record as Mr. Patrice, said the track will use a sand–clay mix rather than concrete or large excavation and that some wooden features may be added for challenge. "It's going to be a sand clay mix ... Nothing permanent," he said. Commissioners noted the material choice was one reason the track was located to the north where natural contours make for features and provide a buffer from nearby residences.

Commissioners also discussed maintenance and neighborhood involvement. Planning and parks staff said neighborhood volunteers have been active on site and that the project has secured grant funding covering the majority of costs; final grant disbursement is pending the board's final approval. No tree removal is planned, and staff said DNRC had cleared brush last year and volunteers spread leftover chips.

A commissioner moved to approve the plan; a second was recorded and the board approved the proposal by voice vote.

The board’s approval authorizes project leaders to proceed with final preparations and to use the grant funds as proposed. Officials said they expect volunteer labor to handle most on-the-ground work; staff will follow up on permits and any required minimal site work.

A next procedural step recorded in the meeting was filing of the grant and finalization of the planned trail connection to the park’s parking areas.
