Students recognized: Toms River high schools showcase STEAM, arts and sports at board meeting

Student representatives and district staff used the Dec. 17 Toms River board meeting to highlight academic, arts and service achievements across the district.

Michaela Melanac, student representative from Tom's River High School East, said the district recently hosted a STEAM open house on Dec. 3 that welcomed more than 300 community members and showcased hands-on activities; she also noted a fall food drive that provided Thanksgiving meals to 68 families. "Our clubs and organizations have remained very active," she said, listing homecoming, senior recognitions and outreach events.

Alicia Leella, representing High School North, described coordinated efforts by the National Honor Society and Student Council to support local food pantries and a successful blood drive; she also acknowledged student achievements including theater, athletics and volunteerism. Michaela Manzy from High School South summarized competitive wins in athletics, marching band achievements, perfect-attendance recognitions and upcoming theater productions.

Administrators presented multiple student awards: winners of an MIT Future Makers coding award, research-program recognitions (Data Nova), STEM fellowship recipients and scholarships that funded trips to HudsonAlpha and an international space design competition. The board noted that a team including Tom's River students won first place at the international competition held at Kennedy Space Center.

District leaders took the opportunity to thank community supporters for donations and volunteer time and closed the segment by encouraging continued engagement in upcoming winter activities.

The student presentation portion of the meeting concluded before routine business; no formal board action was required for the awards and reports.
