Facilities report: tree removal, outdoor classroom grant, roof and window projects

Facilities staff outlined a range of projects and repairs across the district. After a homeowner complaint, the district will remove diseased trees adjacent to South Toms River Elementary; staff said the trees are small enough the grounds crew can handle the work rather than hiring an outside arborist.
At High School East, administration said Tiffany Lucy secured a grant to support construction of an outdoor classroom; the school will perform much of the work while the district ensures ADA accessibility and provides necessary groundwork. Staff described the space as STEAM/environmental and noted it also supports special-needs programming and garden work done by students.
Project updates included preconstruction activity for fabric replacement at the John Bennett Athletic Center, continued roof and solar warranty reviews for phase-2 solar installations, and a window-replacement grant project (site 196 at Washington Street in Westover) that is complete except for two windows the contractor cannot locate; staff estimated refabrication could take about six weeks. Districtwide lead-water testing is ongoing with retesting scheduled for the remaining sites; staff indicated results will be submitted to the state when testing is complete.
Facilities also reported an unmetered tap on the main feed at High School South (service before the meter), which staff said will be corrected to ensure proper metering; staff did not indicate whether prior unmetered use will be retroactively billed. Beachwood township contribution of about $90,000 was noted for soccer-field rehabilitation; irrigation issues reported were fixed promptly.
Administration thanked facilities staff for managing a complex summer of moves and projects that will occupy maintenance, grounds and custodial crews.
