Newton County approves $148,500 Texas A&M contract to create Community Wildfire Defense Plan

Newton County commissioners on Nov. 12 approved a contract (C-25 D41) with Texas A&M for about $148,500 to produce a Community Wildfire Defense Plan.
A project representative, Mark, told the court the plan will outline best practices and mitigation priorities and does not create a binding obligation to purchase equipment or commit the county to specific expenditures. "The plan addresses wildfires... it doesn't say you have to [implement everything]," Mark said, explaining that the document would improve the county's competitiveness for future implementation grants.
Commissioners said they view the plan as a planning-level investment that could unlock additional grant funding for equipment or projects; one commissioner asked whether the county would still be obligated to implement measures if subsequent grants were not secured and was told the plan itself does not compel spending.
The court voted to accept the contract so the plan can be completed and the county can pursue related grants to implement recommendations.
