Presenters urge Newton County residents to submit project pins for regional flood plan to unlock state funding

A presenter briefed the Newton County Commissioners Court on the state regional flood planning process under Texas Water Code Chapter 16 and urged officials and residents to complete an online survey that requires dropping a pin at each site of concern.
The presenter said the Texas Water Development Board will combine regional plans into a state plan, and that participation in the regional process is a prerequisite for seeking funding from the flood infrastructure program. He described the survey as simple — enlarge the map, drop a pin, and answer a short set of multiple-choice questions about whether the problem is flood-related, stormwater- or drainage-related — and said each project or location should be submitted separately.
The court discussed hosting a workshop or a grants-session demonstration so commissioners and residents can complete surveys together and identify priority bridges, culverts and drainage projects. The presenter said the program will have significant funds over the coming years and that the survey is essentially the county’s "wish list" for potential projects; projects not included in the regional plan will generally not be eligible for the related funding programs.
Commissioners were encouraged to engage constituents in submitting pin-based surveys promptly so that Freeze & Nichols (the consulting firm administering the regional planning work) can review and include local needs in the regional plan.
