Toms River board hears $600,000 EPA bus grant, playground funding and summer facility projects

On transportation, the administration reported an EPA award of $600,000 "toward 10 buses," with an approximate allocation of $200,000 for eight propane buses (roughly $25,000 per bus) and $400,000 toward two electric buses, subject to further review of infrastructure costs and available incentives. The administration said the propane funding effectively increases the district’s replacement fleet for the price previously budgeted for seven diesel buses.
The district also said it received a $65,000 recreational grant for playground equipment at South Toms River Elementary; staff are selecting vendor options to match the award. Facilities staff previewed several summer projects: window replacements at Washington Street and West Street Elementary schools starting after June 13, coping repairs at Eastover (grant funded) and phased generator and switch‑gear work at multiple high schools under the Alyssa Law grant.
Staff reported continuing closeouts on referendum projects, final adjustments to security camera installations, the commencement of long‑lead items and a purchase order flow that has generated roughly 9,958 work orders and completed 9,246 to date this fiscal year.
On technology and communications the district said it rolled out ParentSquare districtwide for parent communication, has started Chromebook replacement planning for grades 4–12 and implemented two‑factor login for critical systems to improve security.
Administration noted that electric‑bus purchases depend on a full accounting of infrastructure costs and incentive programs; they said multiple state and federal credits may be available and that they will assemble the full financial picture before committing to electric bus procurement.
No formal contract awards were recorded in the committee minutes portion of the meeting; staff said bids and contracts are being prepared for summer projects and that projects will proceed as procurement and funding permit.
