Parents press Toms River board on bathroom access for transgender students and complain about band director conduct

During the public-comment portion of the July meeting, several parents and residents urged the Toms River Regional School District to address privacy and safety in bathrooms and locker rooms after New Jersey's law on access by gender identity.

Alysa Saratelli and other commenters said they were concerned about students's comfort and safety and asked what plans the district has for parental notification, teacher training and accommodations. Officials responded that the district must follow state law and that individual schools can determine local accommodations; they said the district will follow required procedures when incidents arise and prioritize student safety.

Separately, Jennifer Graham described an alleged pattern of punitive and dismissive behavior by a high-school band director, saying the conduct drove multiple students to quit and that leadership and training of student leaders were inadequate. The board said it would look into the complaint.

Representative quotes: "We follow the law ... and when those incidents, if they do arise, we follow the law and we make sure that all of our children remain safe," a district official said. "It's insane to think it's appropriate for boys to be in the girls' bathroom," one parent said.

Next steps: Board members said they would look into the band complaint and that principals and school staff are the first line to work with families on accommodations; no policy changes were adopted at the meeting.
