At the June 3 DuBois City Council meeting, resident Debbie Mecklin urged the council to pursue recovery of taxpayer funds tied to a local public-corruption case and cited a local news report summarizing a recent guilty plea.
Mecklin read from a Courier Express account saying a former city administrative secretary pleaded guilty on federal charges related to theft and misuse of city funds in a long-running case. She said the report cited approximately $1.5 million diverted into unauthorized accounts between 2008 and 2022 and that the city should seek return of about $306,000 the city paid in legal fees on behalf of former officials. Mecklin noted the defendant’s sentencing was scheduled for Sept. 22 and asked the council to act to recover taxpayer money now.
Council management responded that the city’s bank accounts and disbursement structure were set up so all funds flow into a single disbursement account to provide stronger oversight, and staff said they would look into the concerns raised by the speaker. The management representative described the consolidated disbursement account as a control designed to make it clear how money is spent going forward.
Mecklin’s statements referenced local reporting; the council did not take immediate legal action during the meeting and no formal directive to pursue recovery was recorded in the public transcript.
A second public commenter, Linda London, asked why a U.S. flag had not been installed at Stern Field despite prior requests; management said staff would investigate the missing flag installation.
