Mesa County Valley School District board approves Grand Junction High tennis legacy stone and accepts community donations

The Mesa County Valley School District No. 51 Board of Education voted to approve a "legacy stone" honoring the Grand Junction High School tennis program and to accept funds raised by community donors for the team.

Board members approved the item following a brief presentation; the board's presiding officer asked for the motion and the item passed in roll-call fashion with members recorded as voting in favor. Dr. Hill described the donors as "alumni of GJHS and current families as well," said donors' names would be placed on the stone and said a dedication with activities and an unveiling is planned for Saturday. "Folks donated money for a tribute ... to go up at the new tennis courts to honor the legacy of the program," Dr. Hill said.

The item was brought forward to ensure compliance with district policy before the weekend event, the presiding officer said; President Heights was noted as scheduled to speak on behalf of the district at the unveiling. The transcript did not specify a dollar amount for the donations.

Earlier in the meeting the board amended the published agenda to remove an item described during the session as a "termination." A motion to approve the agenda without item number four received a second and was approved in a roll-call vote before the tennis item was considered.
