Cajon Valley Union School District officials announced the district was awarded an $18.2 million community schools grant over five years to expand literacy supports, family engagement and professional learning across school sites.
Superintendent David Mosiro described the award as a major boost to district literacy efforts and said the funding will accelerate training in evidence-based approaches such as Orton-Gillingham and the Barton reading program, shorten the timeline for district-wide literacy implementation and support wraparound services at school sites.
At the same meeting, Christine Spar, principal at Johnson Elementary, delivered a student-and-staff presentation built around a mentor text to showcase arts integration, bilingual supports, VAPA offerings and literacy interventions. Students and staff credited targeted professional development with recent improvements on the California school dashboard for Johnson.
The district said site teams involved families and community partners in the grant application; principals at 13 schools will form community teams to implement the work, with an emphasis on sustained professional learning and family engagement.
The board applauded the award; trustees and the superintendent said they will present an LCAP update and implementation timeline at upcoming meetings so the public can track grant deployment.
