Board ratifies agreement to return Tory Pines lacrosse coach after 129 days; student supporters urge swift reopening

At the meeting’s public comment period ahead of the closed‑session report, Henry Tangy, a senior on the Tory Pines lacrosse team, urged trustees to approve the deal so players could return to regular practices and team traditions. “For the past 129 days, our team has been without our coach,” Tangy said, asking trustees to “conclude these arduous 129 days to let us return to what our team works for 365 days a year, lacrosse.”
When the board reconvened, it reported two close‑session outcomes. On item 2B the board approved a compromise agreement resolving OAH case number 2025004 related to a student’s special‑education supports and compensatory education. On item 2D trustees Anderson and Viscant moved and seconded a motion to ratify the agreement with John Ozi; “all trustees present voted to ratify an agreement with John Ozi to offer him a coaching position for this semester,” the president read, noting Trustee Williams was absent.
The board read excerpts from Mr. Ozi’s signed personal statement, in which he apologized to students and alumni, acknowledged that some of his conduct “violated CIF bylaws and district board policies,” and accepted that his future employment would be conditional on adhering to CIF bylaws and the agreement’s terms. The readout said the agreement includes a mutual waiver of claims and terms addressing potential future violations; staff told the board the joint statement and Mr. Ozi’s personal statement will be made available upon request.
Supporters in the audience — students, alumni and community members — applauded during the readout and urged the board to let the team resume practices and games. The board did not discuss further public details of the settlement in open session beyond the read statement.
