Council committee forwards emergency repair contract for northwest pump station shaft

Council was told that a coupling on the shaft that opens the influent gate at the northwest pump station had failed, bending the shaft and forcing staff to prop the gate open with straps so the pumps could operate. Janette Best explained staff had hired a contractor to inspect the shaft, had ordered replacement parts, and expected repairs to take a couple of weeks.
"We used a big piece of equipment and pulled it open and then fastened it open," Best said, describing how the gate was being held with straps to maintain station function. Council members asked whether leaving the gate in that position posed safety or operational risks; staff said it prevents routine maintenance because flow cannot be shut off until repairs are completed.
Members voted 8–0 to send resolution 260041 — the construction contract to repair the northwest pump station gate/shaft — to the full council for final approval.
