A commissioner outlined a plan for three age brackets (roughly ages 3–4, 5–7 and 8–12) running across a six-week session. The idea presented calls for two days per week (12 classes total) with makeup days reserved for poor weather, and enrollment thresholds aimed at a five-child minimum and a 15-child maximum per group.
The commissioner proposing the program said staffing is the primary operational hurdle and suggested recruiting college students or local instructors; instructor pay would come from the department’s seasonal/temporary employee line. On fees, the proposing commissioner estimated a cost of about $60 per child and suggested including a T‑shirt.
Commissioners discussed field conditions — noting some fields are not yet ready — and agreed the program could begin on the back grass field at Stephens Park if necessary while fields are repaired. They also discussed options for registration and payment, including using Eventbrite as a temporary solution until the city acquires formal event-registration software.
No formal vote occurred. Commissioners encouraged further planning and outreach to potential instructors and agreed to raise the item with council as needed for software or staffing approvals.
The proposal remains in the planning stage; the commission described it as a pilot program that could expand in future years if successful.
