Auctioneers commission requests level funding as committee probes reserves and escrow claims

PJ Lindsay, deputy director of the Mississippi Auctioneers Commission, told the Senate appropriations subcommittee the agency is seeking level funding for the coming year and reported issuing 29 auctioneer licenses and nine firm licenses in the last cycle. Lindsay also said the agency has handled three complaints — one resolved, one consent order and one suspension — during the period.

Lindsay argued oversight of auctioneers matters because “we do have $4.5 billion estimated flow through the escrow accounts of Mississippi,” a figure later clarified in the hearing after a committee member misheard the number as “million.” Members pressed the agency for clarity on that estimate and on its cash position.

Committee members reviewed the commission’s reserves and spending history. The agency provided two reserve figures in response to questions: one line-item showed $253,140 on hand while an alternate recount of available cash was described as roughly $226,000. Senators also noted the commission’s actual expenditures have trailed appropriations in recent years and asked why contractual and technology requests in the FY26 projection were not reflected in year‑to‑date spending.

On travel, the commission said it had reduced travel from prior years and that the recent request reflected board members attending out‑of‑state conferences for professional development. The subcommittee said it appreciated the presentation and directed follow‑up questions to the agency finance staff.

The committee did not vote on any appropriation at the hearing; members signaled they will seek clarification on the cash‑balance math and the basis for the escrow‑flow estimate in follow‑up materials.
