Yerington council approves Main Street grants and $53,246 in room‑tax allocations

YERINGTON, Nev. — The Yerington City Council on Jan. 26 approved a package of local grants aimed at downtown improvements and tourism events, including acceptance of a Travel Nevada Special Projects Grant of up to $50,000 for sidewalk and trail work on West Goldfield Avenue.
Melanie Young‑Pinkerton, executive director of the Yerington Main Street Committee, presented the group’s 2025 accomplishments and 2026 projects, including a proposed River Walk, an Arts and Cultural District on Littell Street and streetscape items such as benches and trash receptacles. Mayor John J. Garry and the council recognized Young‑Pinkerton’s work.
Interim City Manager Jerry Bryant said the Travel Nevada grant would fund sidewalk and trail improvements in cooperation with Main Street, and the council voted to accept the award. Bryant also asked the council to approve seeking a T‑Mobile Hometown Grant of up to $50,000 to support enhancements to the Littell Street Arts District; he noted the grant had not yet been awarded and said the city should know the determination in February. “The grant has not been awarded yet, but we are seeking council’s approval today. We should know the determination in February,” Bryant said.
Councilman Omar Lopez praised the Main Street work, saying, “This is really good work going on.”
Separately, the council approved Room Tax grant allocations totaling $53,246 for the period Jan. 1–June 30, 2026. The awards include $15,000 for the Yerington Main Street Car Show, $15,000 for the Night in the Country Music Festival, $7,000 to the Lyon County Fair Board, $6,700 to the Yerington Chamber of Commerce and smaller grants to local nonprofits and event organizers. Councilman Nick Beaton announced he would abstain from two items (8.e and 8.h) because of a direct interest in the recipient organizations; those two items passed with a 3‑0‑1 vote (Beaton abstaining). Councilman Omar Lopez disclosed volunteer involvement with one applicant but said he had no personal gain.
The council’s approvals are intended to support downtown revitalization and local events that bring visitors and lodging revenue to the city. The council did not attach further conditions to the Room Tax awards during the meeting.
The council also presented Mayor recognition coins to Main Street leadership and closed the item with unanimous approval of the consent and grant motions.
