The Town of Clayton planning commission and the Board of Zoning Appeals confirmed a quorum, approved the April meeting minutes and moved forward Tuesday with final details for downtown wayfinding banners, including text, sponsor placements and installation logistics.
Committee member said the commission will change one banner label to read “entering historic Downtown Clayton” and place sponsor banners at three entry points to the downtown business district. “So that 3rd column where it says … Historic business district … Instead of that, it will say entering historic Downtown Clayton,” the Committee member said.
The Committee member read a list of sponsors who have deposited checks or committed support, naming DND Auto, Allegiant Precision Tool, Copper Top, North Salem State Bank and Miss Bee's Tease among others; DND Auto provided a $400 check and indicated it would take any remaining spots. The committee agreed to leave additional sponsorship opportunities open for later participants.
On installation details, the Committee member said signs should be placed on poles on the same side of the street as the existing wayfinding and that when multiple poles are clustered the commission can select a nearby pole in the same general area. The commission also discussed a prior idea to have the local utility run power to some poles; that plan was placed on hold because of the cost to install a transformer.
The commission asked staff to confirm sponsor deposits with administrative staff and to submit the final order to the vendor’s representative. Chair emphasized ongoing upkeep, suggesting quarterly checks to ensure banners remain in place and are maintained; town maintenance resources were noted as available to assist.
Votes and formal action: the commission approved the April meeting minutes by voice vote before the wayfinding discussion. The Committee member moved to accept the April meeting, there was a second, members said “aye” and the motion carried.
Next steps: staff will verify sponsor payments, finalize the vendor order and bring any outstanding installation or utility-cost issues back to a future meeting.
