Commission hears staff updates: atrium mural unveiling set, community art boxes deployed, crosswalk repairs complete

Staff provided multiple operational updates to the commission, including completion of the atrium mural, deployment of community art boxes and recent repairs to the Windsor Osborne crosswalk.

Staff said the atrium mural is complete and proposed an unveiling ceremony on June 4, to be sponsored by Explore Brookhaven, with small interpretive materials to help visitors understand the piece. The commission agreed to authorize modest budget use for bookmarks or signage to explain the work.

Commissioners also received a status update that community art boxes (formerly poem boxes) are installed at several locations and that staff will coordinate site visits to finalize remaining placements. One earlier box had been repurposed as a little free library after vandalism to another site.

On public infrastructure, staff reported the Windsor Osborne crosswalk repair and pressure washing were completed during spring break; staff asked whether to schedule pressure washing annually (recommended by the vendor) or every two years; commissioners asked staff to return with a cost recommendation and possible traffic-control approaches to reduce expense.
