Economic development staff for the City of North Port gave a quarterly update during the Community Economic Development Advisory Board meeting on May 19, and the board approved minutes from its March 17 meeting.
Jacqueline Waterhouse, sitting in for the staff liaison, told the board the division has been attending industry events and pursuing leads that could produce local mixed‑use and residential projects. "We have been pretty busy," she said, listing two aviation shows in Miami and Orlando, attendance at the Ignite (FADC) conference in Orlando, and a delegation with staff at the national commercial real estate convention in Las Vegas. She said the division has hosted five inbound missions that have paired buyers and sellers and that several leads have entered development processes.
Waterhouse detailed workforce and business outreach efforts, including two active workforce roundtables—one focused on health care and another on semiconductor manufacturing—and an initiative to expand STEM engagement in local schools. She promoted an upcoming health‑care exposition for June 6, describing it as a hybrid of a career fair and demonstration event intended to help workers advance or switch careers: "We have over 60 tables, 45 vendors that will be there," she said, and noted the fire department will host demonstrations.
Board members asked logistical and follow‑up questions. A member confirmed the June 6 date and Waterhouse offered to circulate a flyer to promote the event. In discussion about future agendas, the chair asked staff for information on the King's Plastics YMCA development and its projected timeline and impacts. A member also requested regular manufacturing updates, noting that STC is finalizing plans for an expansion that would include a manufacturing lab; the member said an opening around August 2028 is anticipated.
On procedural business, the board approved agenda item 26‑0590, the minutes from the March 17 meeting. A motion to approve the minutes was made by the chair and seconded by Michael Endy; the motion passed on a voice vote and the chair declared the minutes approved.
The board set its next meeting for September 15 and adjourned at 10:38 a.m.
