GADSDEN COUNTY — Commissioners agreed during an informational budget workshop to receive brief, five-minute summaries from department heads about potential reductions but deferred detailed questioning until members have reviewed packet materials and met with directors.
The decision followed repeated requests from commissioners who said they received the budget packet only hours before the workshop and needed time to read and digest proposals. Several commissioners said asking departments detailed questions without advance review would be unfair and could put staff on the spot.
The board polled in favor of allowing short presentations and instructed staff to arrange follow-up: commissioners will write down questions during brief presentations, meet individually with department directors if needed, and return for a longer, focused workshop (several commissioners suggested a full‑day session) to examine options and impacts. The county administrator and finance staff emphasized the workshop is informational and that the board — not staff — makes final budget decisions.
During the initial presentations a department head identified as Justin said planning and community development had been asked to freeze three current vacancies as part of the exercise. Commissioners expressed concern about possible community alarm stemming from talk of job cuts and emphasized communications should be managed carefully.
No binding votes were taken; staff will return with department-level impact statements and scheduling proposals for a follow-up workshop prior to formal budget hearings this fall.
