Commissioners approve multiple road-project extensions as residents press for maintenance

Residents pressed the board for better maintenance and timely completion of road work while commissioners approved several time extensions and grant agreements.

Lamonte Horn, speaking for Poston Road residents, described recurring deterioration on an unpaved road and warned that emergency responders face delays when shoulders and drainage fail. "If an emergency vehicle...must negotiate unstable terrain, those lost minutes matter," Horn told commissioners.

The board then approved a time extension for Fairbanks Road phase 2 (drainage and shoulder work), a grant-backed resurfacing of Providence Road and additional extensions for Cane Creek and Barreno Road projects so crews and DOT can complete work and close out grants. Commissioners and staff acknowledged chronic contractor scheduling issues and weather delays; the county engineer said the current plans focus on drainage improvements and paved shoulders in priority locations rather than full widening in this phase.

Public commenter Derek Elias requested follow-up on Adams Street construction and erosion issues, arguing the recently installed sidewalk needs guardrails and better finishing to ensure pedestrian safety. The board asked staff to work with DOT and the contractor to review erosion control and striping and to include recommended safety measures in closeout and maintenance planning.

All road-related extension votes were recorded as approved; commissioners asked staff to prepare options and cost estimates for targeted shoulder widening where safety incidents clustered.
