Norton reports splash pad opening, tennis-court activity and trail work; Woodbooger 100 set for June 13–14

At the May 19 meeting Norton City officials briefed council on several community projects and upcoming events. City Manager Jeffery A. Shupe said the city splash pad and new restrooms officially opened the morning of May 18 for the 2026 season. He told council the parks-restroom facilities are checked throughout the day and restrooms are cleaned each morning, a practice Assistant City Manager and City Engineer Stephen McElroy reiterated.
Shupe said the target dates for the official dedication of the new tennis-court project are the week of Summer Tennis Camp (June 8–10), pending arrival of dedication materials. Councilman Robert Fultz Jr. said the four new courts have seen heavy use for tournaments and suggested portable nets at older courts for pickleball; the city will provide cost analyses if council wants layouts evaluated.
Work on the Multi-Use Trail Project continues near the high school as crews install the Redi Rock retaining wall. Shupe said the Fit Farmer 12K Trail Run is scheduled for this Saturday with 44 registered participants. The Woodbooger 100 Ultramarathon is scheduled for June 13–14 (sign-in on June 12); Shupe said 103 participants had registered across divisions and that organizers planned staggered starts so most runners finish on Sunday.
Shupe also noted regional events: he plans to attend the Southwest Virginia Economic Forum at UVA Wise (announced attendees include Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger) and the Second Annual Regional Housing Symposium. The city is scheduled to host incremental-development workshops in partnership with regional authorities in early June. Vice Mayor Caruso and council members also requested updates on the Ridge Avenue wall and flag replacements at Tipple Hill; Assistant City Manager McElroy said engineers are developing alternatives and updated cost estimates.
