Preston previews summer farmers market, concert series and announces new sponsors

The Preston Parks & Recreation Commission on Jan. 27 outlined plans for summer community programming and announced new sponsors for 2026.

Staff proposed running a Thursday farmers market from July through September, 4–7 p.m., at the park, paired with a Thursday‑night Summer Concert Series. Mark Simmons said the department will use social media influencers tied to an ERTD grant 'passport to Preston' program to promote local businesses and events.

Why it matters: The market and concert series will be the commission’s primary summer public offerings and influence volunteer needs, park operations and vendor participation.

Members reviewed recent community events: 'Stuff‑a‑Cruiser' and 'Santa & Sirens' supplied money and gifts to benefit 44 children, and Parks & Recreation donated about 100 toys to St. Vincent de Paul. The tree lighting drew more people than the prior year. The Tri Town Trail committee’s luminary stroll set up more than 400 luminaries and drew over 100 attendees.

On funding for events, the commission announced three event sponsors for 2026 so far: Jewett City Savings Bank has pledged $2,750 and volunteer support; Mohegan Sun pledged $2,000; a third sponsor is pending. The commission also reported a $609 award from the Preston Community Fund to fund an inclusion aide. Staff noted work on a Community Garden grant and no update on the Active Transportation Grant.

The meeting included a note that the North Stonington sports bubble project remains at a standstill due to shifting developer plans and lack of municipal commitment.

The commission will return with schedules, vendor outreach plans and further grant updates in subsequent meetings.
