Staff reviewed Policy 409 and said they had obtained legal advice to add "guardian" alongside references to parents; they also noted a Code of Virginia change effective July 1 requiring notification of families about course registration deadlines and said the policy now reflects that requirement. The board approved the read updates and discussed the placement of certain paragraphs for clarity (for example, where to list criteria that qualify a student for removal from class).
The board approved updates to the acceptable computer system use policy and other VSBA-recommended edits, including new instructional items addressing technology topics such as AI and scams. Members asked staff to standardize phrasing such as "parent or guardian" throughout related policies; motions to approve on first reading carried.
Separately, the board approved a proposed meeting calendar for the next fiscal year, keeping business meetings on the first Tuesday and work sessions the third Tuesday with a few agreed exceptions for Election Day scheduling.
The board also read and approved a draft resolution nominating Lisa Knopf for the Virginia School Boards Association's inaugural School Board Clerk of the Year award; members noted they would vote again at a work session to ensure full-board participation for the nomination process.
Board members discussed membership in the VSBA policy services network and the associated fee; staff noted the service provides ongoing policy updates that the division frequently uses.
