Board honors SkillsUSA winners and confirms two administrative appointments

The Calvert County Board of Education opened its meeting May 21 by recognizing students from the Career and Technology Academy who placed at the SkillsUSA state competition and by adopting a resolution honoring outgoing student board member Allison Jones for her service.
Robin Burns, a lead advisor for the CTA SkillsUSA chapter, presented a board resolution noting 26 Calvert County students placed in state competition and 12 first-place winners qualified for the 2026 SkillsUSA national conference in Atlanta. "These students will go on using the skills taught through co curricular activities such as SkillsUSA," Burns said.
The board then approved a resolution commending Allison Jones for representing more than 15,000 students and for advocacy on budget and student mental-health issues. Allison Jones thanked board members and staff, described her personal growth in student leadership roles and said she was confident in her successor.
Superintendent recommended two administrative hires. The board voted unanimously (4–0) to appoint Katie Dean as assistant principal at Sunderland Elementary; Dean thanked the board and families and said she looked forward to serving students. The board also approved Sabrina Bergen as director for student services; Bergen introduced herself as an educator and parent committed to supporting students, families and staff.
What happens next: The district will implement the appointments and continue to highlight student and program achievements at future meetings.
