Drainage board adopts acreage corrections for Prairie Creek and George Symonds drains

Hamilton County Drainage Board President Mark Heirbrandt on Feb. 23 approved amended assessments after the county surveyor identified errors in prior acreage calculations for Prairie Creek #279 and George Symonds #283. The board adopted a findings-and-order establishing the maintenance fund for the drains.
The Surveyor told the board that several acres adjacent to the Monon Trail were not included correctly in the October 27, 2025 hearing totals. He said the Elijah Jay Drain #359 had 10.09 acres benefitted by the Monon Trail, Clark & Compton #354 had 5.87 acres that should be removed from a previous 35.90-acre total, and Isaac Jones #361 had 2.25 acres that should be removed from a prior 21.70-acre total. The revised assessed totals for affected parcels were presented in the Surveyor’s report.
Christine Altman asked whether the county maintains the Monon Trail; Surveyor Gary Duncan said county records show maintenance to 216th Street and that the parcels in question are in Adams Township with county ownership of the acreage.
After a public hearing with no speakers present, the board voted to approve the hearing and adopt the amended schedule of assessments. Altman moved to approve the hearing; Heirbrandt seconded, and the motion carried unanimously.
The order records that evidence and objections were considered and that annual maintenance assessments will be less than the benefit to landowners, establishing the maintenance fund for Prairie Creek #279 and George Symonds #283. The board signed the findings and order on Feb. 23.
Next steps: the order takes effect as recorded by the Drainage Board; affected owners and rights-of-way were listed in the Surveyor’s maintenance report.
