Penn State Extension updates commissioners on agronomy research, Master Gardeners and 4‑H activities

Jennifer Mercero, client relationship manager for Area 4 with Penn State Extension, gave the board a quarterly update on extension programming, research and outreach in Carbon County.
Mercero described an agronomy grant studying tall fescue and fertilizer rates, upcoming field events, and a hay/corn planter performance evaluation. She introduced Beth, the new administrative assistant in Weatherly, and said extension offers water-test kits and resources at 529 Lens Trail during weekday business hours. "I come quarterly for those of you that don't know and update the commissioners and the residents on what extension offers," Mercero said.
Mercero summarized Master Gardener activity in the county, including a first-season Seed to Supper six-week class at the Lehighton Area Memorial Library for low‑income residents (11 regular attendees) and a small "It's Time to Plant" workshop attended by about 13 members of the public.
Veil Fussen, Carbon County 4‑H educator, told commissioners about a multi‑county 4‑H summer camp June 22–26 and the county fair August 3–8, with the 4‑H sale on Aug. 8. "We are just flying through the summer here," Fussen said, and encouraged residents to attend the fair and support exhibitors.
Both presenters offered to answer questions and provide contact information; the board thanked extension staff for their work and welcomed the new assistant.
